Okanagan Arts: Summer 2008

Open Studios
Artists invite you to witness art in the making, and to explore the workings of their studios. Step inside a potters wet room, discuss carving with a stonemason. Learn where artists find inspiration and why they do what they do, and what makes them so passionate about their craft. For visitors, we open our doors to you.
Open StudiosArtists are listed by geographical location. Each section details the artist's work, venue, opening days and times. Please be aware that some artists require you to call for an appointment, to ensure they're at their studios when you are able to visit. Enjoy the journey.

Maryanne paints realism in watercolour, gouache (pronounced "gwash").

2. Dawn Emerson

Dawn Emerson is a mixed media artist residing in the Okanagan Valley in Kelowna. Her artistic style involves building tactile surfaces that are spontaneous and come alive with their own energetic and unpredictable uniqueness. In her fresh individual approach, Dawn hides and repeats images, creating a mysterious edge to her work. Her artwork has its own visual language and trademark of distinction.

4. Emil Nagy

Most of my paintings reflect our unique Okanagan environment. The historical and soon vanishing structures are one of my many subjects. My eclectic style beckons me to create an air-brush like background.

5. Carrie Harper

Carrie's been a visual artist for over 16 years. She studied fine art at the Alberta College of Art and Design in the early '90's and Digital graphic design in 2004. In 2007 Carrie made a full-time commitment to painting and started her downtown Kelowna studio. 6. Ken Cochrane

Ken paints in subject matter that has been his direct interest and experience here in BC in the past. Those are mainly BC coastal scenes, Ranch / Rodeo scenes and Wildlife. The subject matter available in this paradise we live in has no end, as an artist, "aren't we the lucky ones".

7. Beverly Rein

Beverly's work is mixed media acrylic painting on a textured surface. Inspired by lines, colors, and textures found in rocks, trees and the surrounding raw earth, she explores the interconnectedness of things in our environment. Beverly offers drawing and painting instruction in her studio.

9. Graham T. Chambers

Graham explores many artistic directions, capturing the essence of the Okanagan in landscapes inspired by the beauty of the valley and sculpture strategically placed in lush garden settings.

10. Geert Maas

Internationally acclaimed artist Geert Maas created owns and operates Geert Maas Sculpture Gardens and Gallery in Kelowna. It is the only Sculpture Garden of its kind in British Columbia, featuring one of the largest collections of bronze sculptures in Canada. Maas' work is held in public, corporate, and private art collections worldwide and has been shown in New York, London, Paris and in prestigious exhibitions in Canada, Europe, Japan, U.S.A.

Glass Bead Artist. Jewelry Designer
Intricate, distinctive, luminous, handmade glass beads strung into beautiful and funky bracelets and earrings. Earthy, gem-like, one of a kind beads are wound, white hot in an intense flame, from molten strands of coloured Italian and German glass, precious metals, enamels and frits. Permanent and immutable, BELLA DOLCI beads become the most intimate art objects ­ glass talismans worn next to skin.

2. Colleen J Dyson

My work is mostly in oils, reflecting my obsession with light and colour and making no political statement. Each painting is imbued with my own memories from times past and present and is easily understood. They can be viewed for their visual comfort or simply for enjoyment.

3. Lynden Beesley

Her art combines intaglio and relief printmaking with bronze and stone sculpture, influenced by myth and a pre-raphaelite aesthetic, infused with Okanagan Sunshine. Lynden offers workshops.

2. June Seed

While I work in a variety of mediums, recently I have concentrated on abstract form and colour. My work is spontaneous and I let my imagination run freely to let form come to life by mixing my own colours, combining acrylics and inks.

3. Julie Elliot

My paintings combine printmaking and painting in innovative ways emphasizing line, pattern, texture, and flat shapes. I'm exploring ideas being connected and deeply grounded in one place. I'm inspired by the orchards, birds and animals surrounding me in rural Oyama.

4. Helen Kilsby

My works have been described as ëtextural, colourful, and abstract. Evolving mostly through landscape, they demonstrate the manipulative and evocative power of paint.

2. Louise Lambert

4. Gillian Paynter

High temperature Stoneware Pottery
Established in 1984, as a working studio and gallery. it was enlarged in 1994 to include other BC Potters. The original natural gas downdraft kiln is still used and is fired every two months. Functional and decorative work features some orchard and Okanagan themes.

1. Angela Hook

Angela works with wire as an artistic medium. Her fluid linear sculptures are created with a single continuous strand. Angela's work often explores equine themes, as she is a real horse lover!

2. Samarpan Faasse

This Galleria is during the 'Renaissance People in a Renaissance Town - Celebrating a Century of Creativity in Penticton' centennial exhibit at the Penticton Museum and Archives. There are many artists and organizations participating.

3. Marcia Stacy

Marcia's work speaks to the souls of those who connect with its underlying message. 4. Ron Stacy

Ron's art speaks with a narrative quality loaded with drama and mystery. Through his brush, a still life comes alive with colour and form. Ron's mythological Ravens reflect the quintessential aspects of human nature from deeply spiritual, to jester like foolishness. Ron has been teaching painting for more than 18 years and will now be offering classes at his new studio in Summerland.

2. Evalynne A. McDougall

I work primarily in pastel and acrylic, and use an impasto technique for both media to achieve a more contemporary but painterly reflection of reality. My work is currently shown in galleries in Alberta, BC and Washington.
